Chapter 1: The Basement Find

Mia Torres was no stranger to trouble, but detention on a Friday afternoon felt like a new low. She slouched in the back of the classroom, doodling in her notebook while Mr. Hargrove droned on about responsibility. Across the room, Jake Riley flicked a paper football at Ethan Chen, who barely looked up from his phone. Anika Patel, sitting by the window, was buried in a history book, probably pretending she wasn’t here.

“Since you four love wasting time,” Mr. Hargrove said, glaring, “you’ll spend your detention cleaning the basement storage room. Maybe some hard work will teach you to respect school property.”

Mia groaned. The basement was a dusty, creepy maze of old desks and forgotten junk. But arguing with Hargrove was like arguing with a brick wall, so she grabbed her backpack and followed the others downstairs.

The basement smelled like mildew and regret. Flickering fluorescent lights cast long shadows over stacks of boxes and broken chairs. Hargrove handed them a list of tasks—organize, sweep, repeat—and left with a warning to stay out of trouble.

“Great,” Ethan muttered, shoving his phone in his pocket. “We’re basically in a horror movie now.”

“Could be worse,” Jake said, tossing his skateboard onto a pile of boxes. “At least we’re not writing essays.”

Anika adjusted her glasses, peering at a shelf of dusty yearbooks. “This place is like a time capsule. Look, this one’s from 1953.”

Mia, never one to sit still, started poking around. She wasn’t cleaning—she was exploring. Behind a stack of moldy textbooks, she spotted a wooden panel that looked out of place. It was carved with faint, swirling symbols, like something from an old adventure movie.

“Guys, check this out,” she called, running her fingers over the carvings.

Jake sauntered over, followed by Ethan, who looked skeptical. Anika hesitated but joined them, clutching her history book like a shield.

“It’s probably just termite damage,” Ethan said, but his eyes lingered on the symbols.

Mia pressed the panel, and with a soft click, it slid open, revealing a small, hidden compartment. Inside was a leather pouch, heavy and worn. Her heart raced as she untied it and pulled out a brass compass, its surface etched with the same swirling symbols. The needle spun lazily, not pointing north but twitching like it had a mind of its own.

“Whoa,” Jake whispered. “That’s no Dollar Store junk.”

Anika leaned closer, her voice hushed. “It looks… old. Like, really old. Those symbols might be runic or something.”

Ethan snorted. “Or it’s a prop from some drama club disaster. Let’s not get carried away.”

Mia turned the compass over, and a folded piece of parchment slipped out. She unfolded it carefully, revealing a hand-drawn map of Willow Creek, but not the town they knew. The streets were different, and a path marked with an X led to a spot labeled “The Vault.”

“This is a treasure map,” Mia said, her voice brimming with excitement. “We found a freaking treasure map in the school basement.”

Jake grinned. “Okay, I’m in. Let’s find this Vault thing.”

Anika bit her lip. “It could be dangerous. Or a prank. We should tell someone.”

Ethan crossed his arms. “Yeah, like Hargrove? He’ll confiscate it and bore us to death with a lecture.”

Mia met their eyes, one by one. “Come on. We’re stuck in this boring town, in this boring school. Don’t you want to know what this is? Just one adventure.”

The basement was silent except for the hum of the lights. Finally, Anika nodded, and Ethan sighed, muttering, “Fine, but if we die, I’m haunting you first.”

Jake clapped his hands. “Sweet! Team Treasure, assemble!”

Mia tucked the compass and map into her backpack, her mind racing. Whatever this was, it was bigger than detention. It was a chance to be something more than just another kid in Willow Creek.

As they headed back upstairs, the compass in her bag seemed to hum faintly, like it was calling them forward.
